Types of Non-Stick Coatings for Cookware and Equipment

Teflon is the common name for PTFE-based coatings. Novaflon applies and restores non-stick coatings on pans, multicookers, restaurant equipment, and industrial equipment. The lineup includes six types, from the everyday Standard to the premium Ultra, which differ in number of layers, abrasion resistance, and non-stick properties.

Below is a description of each coating and guidance on which one fits a home pan, a restaurant kitchen, or food production.

How to Choose a Coating — Home, Restaurant, Production

Coating for home use

Standard, Granite, or Platinum work well for home use. The choice depends on how intensively the item is used and the desired level of non-stick performance. Learn more about coating restoration for home cookware on the home coatings page.

Coating for restaurants and cafes

Platinum, Chef, PRO, or Ultra are used for restaurant kitchens and pastry production. Platinum is chosen when high non-stick performance is the priority, Chef for equipment with heavier mechanical load and higher scratch risk, and Ultra for chefs and bakeries that need maximum non-stick performance at higher working temperatures. Learn more on the restaurant coatings page.

Coating for food production

Bakeries and other food production facilities need PRO industrial coating — it withstands thermoforming processes, contact with aggressive cleaning agents, and industrial-scale use. Learn more on the food industry coatings page.

Coating for engineering parts

Tefiks, PRO, or Ultra are used for industrial parts, molds, sealing equipment, and technical components. Learn more on the engineering coatings page.

Not sure which coating fits your case? Message us on Viber or Telegram, describe the task, and a Novaflon manager will help you solve it.

Standard Coating

A two-layer PTFE-based coating, a cost-effective solution for everyday cookware. Thickness over 20 microns, manufacturer testing 500–8,000 DR.

Suitable for: pans, baking molds, multicookers, waffle makers for everyday household use.

Benefits: good non-stick performance, easy to wash and clean, works on a variety of shapes.

Granite Coating

A three-layer system reinforced internally with ceramic microparticles, which increases abrasion resistance. Thickness over 35 microns, testing 2,000–10,000 DR.

Suitable for: frying cookware in cafes and at home, items with heavy use.

Benefits: looks like real granite, higher abrasion resistance than Standard.

Platinum Coating

Platinum has the strongest “nothing sticks” effect in the lineup for home and restaurant use. Two fluoropolymer layers with a reinforced base layer let food glide across the surface even without oil. Thickness 35–45 microns, testing 10,000–25,000 DR.

Suitable for: home cookware with delicate foods, restaurant cookware, frying surfaces under heavy load.

Benefits: strongly repels water and grease, glossy finish, well suited for delicate foods, reinforced base layer for durability under heavy loads.

Chef Coating

A three-layer system designed for the restaurant industry: a strong base layer, an abrasion-resistant middle layer, and a textured top coat. Thickness 45–50 microns, testing 20,000–35,000 DR.

Suitable for: professional restaurant kitchen equipment, cookware under maximum load.

Benefits: reinforced base and middle layers, distinctive textured surface, scratch resistance.

PRO Coating — Industrial for Food Production

An industrial three-layer coating for food production and thermoforming processes. Its non-porous molecular structure provides increased resistance to aggressive chemicals and abrasion. Thickness 45–50 microns, testing 10,000–25,000 DR.

Suitable for: industrial baking molds and press molds, plastic and rubber casting, food production equipment.

Benefits: non-porous structure, resistance to aggressive chemicals.

Ultra Coating — Premium Coating for Chefs and Bakeries

Ultra is a premium purple-colored coating with a thickened non-stick layer, designed for professional kitchens and bakeries. Compared to PRO, it has a higher working temperature — up to 260°C — and better non-stick performance than Chef.

Suitable for: chefs, pastry production, and tasks that require maximum non-stick performance and resistance to high temperatures.

Safety and Usage Guidelines

PTFE is a chemically inert material that doesn’t react with food, water, acids, or alkalis under normal usage conditions. The Novaflon lineup uses PFOA-free coatings — PFOA is a substance once used in the production of some fluoropolymer coatings that became one of the reasons for debates about Teflon’s safety.

Novaflon coatings are certified by Ukraine’s Ministry of Health, hold EU Food Contact status, and are certified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

PTFE coatings are designed for use in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Don’t leave empty cookware on high heat, and don’t exceed the allowed temperature for a specific coating. Empty cookware can heat up especially fast on gas and induction stoves.

FAQ

🍳 Is Teflon coating harmful to health?

When used properly, PTFE coating poses no health risk. Don’t leave empty cookware on high heat, and follow the temperature guidelines for the specific coating.

🍳 What is PFOA, and is it in Novaflon coatings?

PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) is a substance once used in some fluoropolymer coatings that became one of the reasons for debates about Teflon’s safety. All coatings in the Novaflon lineup are PFOA-free.

🍳 Can a non-stick coating be restored if it has worn off?

Yes. Novaflon restores non-stick coatings on pans, grills, waffle makers, multicookers, other cookware, and engineering parts. During restoration, the old coating is removed, the surface is cleaned, and a new coating system is applied. The service life after restoration depends on the condition of the item’s base, the chosen coating, and subsequent use. To find out the cost and timeline, message us on Viber or Telegram.

🍳 How does Ultra coating differ from PRO?

Ultra is a premium coating with a thickened non-stick layer for chefs and bakeries. Compared to PRO, it has a higher working temperature, up to 260°C, and better non-stick performance than Chef.
